A Course in Miracles
"Teach only love, for that is what you are"
These Words mirror exactly the lesson that the Course is offering us. What would the world look like if we could integrate these words into our daily lives?
It does not look at all as if we are only love, for fear and hate, the favourites of the ego, seem to be our aim. Perhaps this is why the Course begins with these words:
This is a course in miracles. It is a required course. Only the time you take it is voluntary. Free will does not mean that you can establish the curriculum. It means only that you can elect what you want to take at a given time. The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love, for that is beyond what can be taught. It does aim however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love's presence, which is your natural inheritance. The opposite of love is fear, but what is all-encompassing can have no opposite.
This course can therefore be summed up very simply in this way:
Nothing real can be threatened.
Nothing unreal exists.
Herein lies the peace of God.
The Course shows us that God is only love, and therefore He can create only love. Everything that is not love, is not of Him. Why is it then, that we experience so little of this love? Because we turned away from it. We try to find it in relationships, but most of us realize quickly that, even when we try really hard, hate appears. We prefer to see a lot of grey areas between hate and love, but the Course teaches us that those grey areas are made by us, in order to cloud our vision.
As soon as we leave love, we land in the ego world, and there indeed are a lot of grey areas. The ego makes all of these different forms in order to prevent us from ever really looking at the content of all our problems. How much the ego rules us is explained very clearly, and yet time and again it is pointed out that we can choose. Choose, if we want to be host of God or of the ego.
To choose, that is our chance to get away from what seems to hold us tight in our daily lives. We can choose anew every day, every minute, and every second. And if we choose wrongly once again, the Course teaches us not to feel guilty about that mistake, but only to choose again. Guilt and sin are from ego and keep us in prison. But when only love exists, guilt and sin cannot exist. This is the exceptional lesson the Course teaches us.
We are taken by the hand, and step-by-step it is shown to us, just how much room we give the ego in our daily lives, and then we can choose:
"Teach only love, for that is what you are."
